Staying Safe
Meeting for marriage rests on trust. That is exactly why fraudsters use it.
Below is what is worth knowing before the first conversation.
Money
Do not send money to someone you met online. The reasons given are
familiar: an urgent operation, stuck on the road, a blocked card, money for a
ticket, an investment with guaranteed returns. None of them justifies it.
A request for money at any stage is sufficient grounds to stop talking and
tell us.
Documents and data
Do not send photographs of your passport, bank cards or verification codes
from messages. A request for any of these is a major warning sign.
Haste
Fraudsters hurry you. Being pushed into another messenger within minutes,
pressed for a quick decision, or played on emotionally are all warning
signs.
Pressure to move unusually fast is itself worth pausing over, whatever the
stated reason.
Check
- ask about what is stated in the profile and compare the answers
- suggest a video call before meeting
- ask to speak with his or her relatives
- search for the person's photographs with a reverse image search
The wali and family
For a sister, the involvement of a wali or a relative is not a formality
but a protection. Tell your family about the acquaintance from the start,
not when things have gone far.
Meeting
Meet for the first time only in a public place, preferably during daylight
hours. Tell those close to you where you are going and with whom. Do not get
into a stranger's car and do not go into closed premises.
If something feels wrong
Write to the administrator through "Write to the administrator" in the bot.
Describe what happened and give the profile number.
We check every report. Messages within the service are kept, so it is
possible to establish what occurred.
Why conversations stay inside the service
While you write in the bot, your telephone number and username stay with
you, and the conversation is preserved. If something goes wrong, there is
something to show. Once you move to private messages, that protection is
gone.
Exchange contacts when you are sure about the person — not because you were
asked to.
